A belt filter press is a bio-solids/sludge dewatering device that applies mechanical pressure to chemically conditioned slurry, which is sandwiched between two tensioned belts, by passing those belts through a serpentine of decreasing diameter rolls. The machine can actually be divided into three zones:
- Gravity zone where free draining water is drained by gravity through a porous belt
- Wedge zone where the solids are prepared for pressure application
- Pressure zone where medium, then high pressure is applied to the conditioned solids
Typically, a belt filter press receives slurry ranging from 1 to 4 percent feed solids and produces a final product of 12 to 35 percent cake solids. Performance depends on the nature of the solids being processed.

Working Principle
Dehydration zone
When the pulp concentration is 0.8%-3%, it first enters the pre-dewatering zone, and then enters the gravity dewatering zone. The gravity dewatering zone is dehydrated by the pressure between the filter belt and the roll surface, and the concentration after dewatering is about 3%-8%, and then enters the press dewatering zone. The press dewatering zone is divided into 3 press working zones according to the requirements of the pulp. The concentration of each work area is different.
Washing area
Because a small part of the pulp is subjected to pressure to stick to the surface of the filter belt, it will affect the next work. The cleaning method adopts the brushing type, which is cleaned with a brush and backwashed with high-pressure water.

This series of filter press is composed of guide rollers, filter rollers, upper and lower filter belts and filter belt tensioning, correction, flushing, and adjustment devices. The press rolls are arranged in an S shape, and the diameter of the press rolls is arranged from large to small, so that the contact surface between the filter belt and the press roll is large, the pressing time is long, and the pressure on the sewage is small and slow. The upper and lower filter belts run in the same direction and at the same speed. The pressure and shear force on the sludge generated by the tension of the filter belt squeeze the capillary water out of the sludge to achieve the purpose of sludge dewatering.
